About

H-E-B is a regional chain of supermarkets based in San Antonio, Texas. The company operates more than 420 stores across Texas as well as northern Mexico. H-E-B was founded in 1905 in Kerrville as a small, family-owned store. Since its foundation, H-E-B has been owned and run by the H.E. Butt family, making it Texas' largest private company. H-E-B employs more than 145,000 people.

Providing customers with high-quality, low-priced products

Following the strategy of low prices allowed H-E-B to survive the Great Depression successfully and rapidly expand across the state. In 1949 H-E-B started changing its small grocery stores into larger supermarkets. The company added a variety of new departments to its stores: from seafood shops and in-store bakeries to fast-food and take-out departments. The range of products that H-E-B offers usually consists of food produce and pharmacy supplies. Some of the products that are on sale in the stores are processed by the company itself, which allows it to maximize profits. These are, for example, milk, cheese, different yogurts, meat, ice cream, baked goods, and fruit drinks. H-E-B operates more than 12 factories in the state of Texas. Historically, the company is known for its donations, with 5 percent of annual pre-tax income given to the education charities and food banks.

Before midnight shopping, please check local hours

Besides numerous USA locations, H-E-B also operates stores in Mexico. The first international location opened in Monterrey, Mexico, in 1997. The majority of H-E-B sites in the US are open from 6 AM Monday through Sunday. Closing times may vary by a few hours, although most stores close around midnight.
